Frequently Asked Questions
Making the decision to undergo surgical procedures can be a difficult one, and there are many questions you may have. Please read the frequently asked questions below which may answer any queries or ease any concerns you may have.
How can ear reshaping surgery improve your appearance?
This type of surgery specifically alters the shape and size of the ears. Unlike many of the other procedures we offer, this is not an anti-ageing treatment, but a way to create a permanent change to the aesthetics of the ear or ears.
Who is suitable for this type of surgery?
Surgery to change the aesthetics of the ears can be offered to suitable patients of any age providing they are over 18. An otoplasty consultation is essential to determine whether ear reshaping surgery is suitable for you, and what technique will provide you with the best result. Both male and female patients undergo this type of surgery.
What happens during otoplasty procedures?
This depends on what you wish to change about your ears. During surgery the cartilage or tissue is shaped or altered in order to create an improved aesthetic. Your surgeon will give you a detailed breakdown of how this will work practically.
This type of cosmetic surgery takes 1-1.5 hours, on average, but this may vary depending on the patient.
What is recovery like?
With ear reshaping surgery there will be some initial swelling and bruising which is normal and subsides in time. Painkillers will be prescribed to help you manage pain or discomfort you might feel after surgery.
A full aftercare plan will be given to you, including when you’re likely to be able to return to work. On average, patients usually take around 4 weeks to recover but this varies patient to patient.
How long do the results of ear surgery last?
This procedure offers permanent results – you will not need top up treatments.
Who should you trust to perform an otoplasty?
Ear reshaping surgery is a popular procedure and we know it transforms the lives of patients. LASE Cosmetic is based in Newcastle and offers a team of surgeons and otoplasty experts ready to help you feel more comfortable in your own skin. Our team are recognised on the specialist register for plastic surgery at the General Medical Council.
Does otoplasty hurt
Not usually. Like any surgery there is some discomfort afterwards but most of our patients stop requiring pain relief after a few days. Occasionally discomfort or pain can last longer. Our surgeons will always discuss risks and the expected post-op experience before any surgical procedure.
How long does otoplasty surgery take
It varies but in most cases the operation takes between 2-3hours.
Can otoplasty be reversed
This will depend on the type of surgery you have undergone and the length of time since the surgery. If surgery was recent it is likely that any sutures used can be released or removed. If suture techniques were performed months or years earlier or cartilage scoring techniques were used it is less likely the result can be partially or fully reversed.
How long are ears swollen after otoplasty
This will vary according to the technique used and your own powers of healing but in general swelling lasts 2-3 months. Bruising often lasts a shorter length of time.
Can otoplasty be done under local anaesthesia
Yes, in older patient it is more common to perform otoplasty under local anaesthetic than a general anaesthetic. In young patients otoplasty is usually performed under a general anaesthetic.
