Make no mistake, getting a boob job is a big decision that shouldn’t be made lightly. With more than 40 years’ combined experience in providing aesthetic and cosmetic surgeries however, we feel we are qualified to provide insights into the procedure. As the most popular form of cosmetic surgery in the UK currently, it’s likely that you will have spoken to people that have undergone the surgery or also have an interest. This post is designed to answer many of the questions you may have about breast enlargement.

What’s involved in Breast Augmentation?

A boob job, also known as breast enlargement or breast augmentation, is a surgical procedure intended to increase the size of the breasts. The exact scope of the size increase, as well as where the implants will be positioned, will be discussed during any pre-surgical consultations.

The boob job procedure is typically conducted under general anaesthetic and starts with a small incision on the underside of the breast. The implant is then positioned either behind the chest muscle or in between your breast tissue and chest muscle. The incisions are then stitched closed, cleaned, and covered with a dressing. Breast augmentation surgery typically takes between 1 and 2 hours.

How to decide whether to get a boob job?

As mentioned earlier, a boob job isn’t a procedure that should be rushed into. Even if you feel strongly that you would like larger breasts, it’s important to take time to consider the following information.

Research surgeons

You want to get to know the person that will be performing the surgery and check their qualifications. Every clinic offering cosmetic surgery should be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Individual surgeons must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and reputable plastic surgeons will often be registered with British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and / or BAAPS. Our lead cosmetic and plastic surgeon, Mr Ali-Khan, is a full member of BAAPS (British Associated of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons), BAPRAS, and registered as a specialist plastic surgeon with the GMC.

It’s always recommended that patients speak with their surgeon in-person before undergoing the procedure. This gives you an opportunity to ask important questions that relate to their experience, the clinic and its facilities, surgical techniques, and how to prepare.

Type of implants

Most breast implants in the UK are made from silicone. Again, a consultation is often most effective in revealing what type of implant will achieve the best results for the patient.

LASE Cosmetic are proud to be partnered with Motiva Health to provide innovative breast implant options. This includes the Motiva Round PLUS, Ergonomix, and Ergonomix2®. The range of Motiva implants available allows patients to select the size, shape, and feel they want. Motiva continue to sport a complication rate below 1%, with a minimal incision made during the procedure. Our other supplier is PERLE by GC Aesthetics, which utilise Emunomic™ Breast Tissue Dynamic Gel to prevent wrinkling. These implants are also optimised for safety and comfort.

Recovery period for breast augmentation

In most cases, you will be able to move freely, though gently, after having the surgery. It can take up to 2-3 months for patients to see a full recovery. The surgeon will likely recommend avoiding driving for at least a week, as well as exercise for at least a month. Although every patient will receive a set of recommendations for recovery which are unique to them.

Risks associated with boob jobs

As is the case with most kinds of invasive surgery, boob jobs carry certain risks associated with the procedure and the implants. This can include:

  • Blood clots.
  • Troublesome scarring including internally, known as capsular contracture.
  • Implant changing shape within the body – rippling, creases, rupturing.
  • Sensation issues in the nipples.
  • Infection or allergic reaction.
  • Implant illness and growths such as ALCL.

What other kinds of breast surgeries are there?

Finally, an important consideration when deciding to undergo surgery of any kind is what options you have. At LASE Cosmetic, breast augmentation surgery is just one of the breast and chest surgical treatments we offer. Oftentimes, women have issues with their breasts not due to their size, but due to orientation or positioning. For solutions, our specialists can perform breast lifts, breast asymmetry surgery, and more. By requesting a one-on-one consultation with a medical professional, you’ll gain an insight into what could be the best course of action based on your situation and goals.
