What Is Gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is a condition in men where excess tissue forms the shape of breasts. This could be due to several things such as:

  • Medications
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Genetic factors

Lots of men are affected by gynaecomastia, with 60-70% of adolescent boys affected according to the NHS. They also add that approximately one-third of adult men are affected at some point in their lives. In men aged 50 to 80, some studies report this to be as high as 65%.

Whilst it’s not necessarily bad for your physical health, it can significantly impact an individual’s mental health and self-esteem. Furthermore, it can cause men to feel like a failure if diet and exercise alone are not helping. This in turn impacts their mental health further and can make them feel hopeless about what to do next.

This is where male chest reduction surgery can be helpful, allowing men to achieve a flatter chest and regain confidence when other approaches haven’t worked.

What Is Male Reduction Surgery?

Male chest reduction surgery is a procedure designed to treat gynaecomastia by removing excess tissue from the chest, helping to create a flatter appearance. Rather than reducing volume, the aim is to restore a more balanced chest shape that looks and feels natural.

At LASE Cosmetic, this treatment is suited to men who are experiencing excess tissue in the chest area. Many of our patients choose this treatment to achieve a more traditionally masculine contour. In some cases, the procedure can be combined with fat transfer if this approach is better suited to achieving a natural appearance.

How Male Reduction Surgery Can Help

Male chest reduction surgery offers a way for men who feel self-conscious about their chest to achieve a more masculine chest shape. This is where surgery can help improve both physical comfort and emotional confidence. See further benefits below:

Improved confidence

There’s a lot of social stigma around gynaecomastia with lots of men feeling self-conscious about taking their top off in social situations. For example when training at the gym or walking along the beach, men might stay fully covered up to avoid drawing attention to their body.

This often stems from concerns about being perceived as having ‘man boobs’, which can significantly affect their confidence. However by having male chest reduction surgery, it can greatly improve confidence allowing men to feel more comfortable in themselves.

“After significant weight loss, for years I sat on the fence about having something done about the excess skin and moobs it had left behind. However the second I took the plunge and visited LASE Cosmetic I can honestly say it was the best decision I ever made. From my initial consultation with Mr Ahmed Ali-Khan to my procedures and follow ups with Mr James Wokes I was treated brilliantly and felt hugely supported throughout.” – Rob

More choice of clothing

Instead of being limited about what clothing you can wear (for example covering up at the beach), you’re free to dress as you please. This means on a warm day, instead of feeling like you need to cover up, you can relax and feel comfortable in your own skin.

This gives you more freedom as you can focus less on hiding your chest and more on enjoying different activities (and the warmer weather).

Increased motivation

Many patients feel more motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle after surgery as a flatter chest can help you feel more aligned with your fitness goals. Furthermore it can help you feel more confident when working out as you’re not as self conscious about what others think.

You might also find yourself going to the gym more, participating in group activities, or exercising in clothing you might have previously avoided. This renewed sense of confidence can make it easier to stay consistent, helping you build positive habits.

Better relationships

As confidence improves, many patients feel more relaxed and at ease in themselves, which can naturally carry over into their relationships.

Feeling less self-conscious can also make it easier to engage more comfortably with others. This often supports healthier, more positive relationships and day-to-day interactions because you’re no longer holding back or feeling preoccupied with the way you look.

Improved body image

Gynaecomastia can create a disconnect between how a man feels and how they see their body when they look at themselves in the mirror. Surgery can help create a chest shape that feels more proportionate to the rest of your body, and generally, make you feel happier with your body image.

In turn, this can lead to a more positive sense of self and reduce the constant worry around appearance. This impacts every part of your life from your relationships, to job interviews, to comfortable enjoying a holiday.

According to Men’s Health, a quarter of people feel self conscious exercising in a gym, with 27% worrying about being judged by others.

Is Gynecomastia Surgery Safe?

Gynaecomastia surgery is generally considered a safe procedure when carried out by a qualified and experienced surgeon. As with any surgery, risks are managed through careful planning, modern techniques, and the right aftercare.

The surgeons at LASE Cosmetic in Newcastle specialise in this type of procedure and have extensive experience in treating gynaecomastia. If you decide this is the right treatment for you, a skilled surgeon will guide you through every step, explaining the procedure and discussing the most suitable approach based on your needs.

You’ll also receive clear aftercare guidance to support a smooth recovery and help achieve the best possible outcome.

What to Expect During Male Chest Reduction

Knowing what to expect before undergoing any sort of surgical procedure is important as you can feel more relaxed going into it. We know that it’s a daunting experience, so the more you know about the surgery the better so there’s no surprises.

At LASE Cosmetic, we follow the below process:

Before

Before any treatment, we carry out a one-to-one consultation to understand your goals and assess your suitability for surgery. This personalised approach ensures that any treatment is based on the look you want to achieve rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all.

During this consultation, your surgeon will discuss your concerns, examine the chest area, and determine the best approach for your case. Everything will be explained clearly, including how the procedure works and what recovery involves. This gives you the chance to ask questions before making a decision.

During

During chest reduction surgery, excess tissue is removed to make the area less prominent. The technique your surgeon chooses will depend on your personal goals and how much your size is due to decrease, but it often includes liposuction or fat transfer to reduce fat if this is deemed the main issue.

Male chest fat reduction surgery takes 1.5-2 hours, on average, but this will vary depending on the patient.

After

Afterwards, you may notice some swelling and tenderness, which is normal, and painkillers can be prescribed to manage pain. You may be kept overnight to ensure you’re recovering well.

Full aftercare information is provided after the surgery, including how to care for your scars and guidance on when to return to exercising or work. Usually, patients usually take around 4-6 weeks to recover but this varies patient to patient.

Also a check up allows your surgeon to make sure you’re healing well.

Hopefully you feel more informed about breast reduction surgery and the different ways this can restore your confidence.

As a family-run surgery, we want every patient to feel confident about the procedure they’re having and also their interactions with our team.
