In recent years, the popularity of both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures has increased, and with that, so has the concern around safety.
At LASE Cosmetic, we know that anyone considering aesthetic treatment wants to feel confident in their practitioner, the products being used, and the safety of the clinic.
With this in mind, we welcome recent changes to tighten regulation across the UK and want to take this opportunity to reassure our patients.
Why Are New Standards Being Introduced?
Worryingly, the current legal framework means that almost anyone can carry out non-surgical procedures such as fillers or microneedling without any formal training or qualifications.
In response to growing concern and increasing reports of botched treatments, the Scottish Government recently concluded a major consultation with over 2,200 responses from medical experts, industry professionals, and members of the public.
Following this, there was a need for new regulations designed to protect patients and create a safer, more transparent industry.
What Are the Proposed Changes?
To address different levels of risk across different procedures, a new framework will divide treatments into the three groups below:
- Group 1: Low-risk treatments like microneedling and non-ablative laser facials. These will require a local authority licence for both the premises and the individual practitioner.
- Group 2: Medium-risk procedures such as injectable treatments (e.g., Botox® and dermal fillers). These must be carried out under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional in a setting regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS).
- Group 3: Higher-risk surgical procedures like breast or buttock augmentation. These will only be allowed to take place in HIS-regulated medical settings, carried out by qualified healthcare professionals.
The idea behind the move is to introduce both primary and secondary legislation to implement these changes, offering consistent safeguards for patients while supporting qualified practitioners.
Why Is This Important?
For those thinking about having aesthetic treatments, the lack of current regulation can be confusing and dangerous. In fact, almost a third of people surveyed believed that dermal fillers were already regulated, when in fact, they are not.
The aim of the new framework is to ensure that anyone undergoing a cosmetic procedure is treated in a clean, professional setting by someone properly trained to do so.
At LASE Cosmetic, all of our injectable and surgical treatments are administered by fully qualified professionals, using safe, approved products and techniques. Our clinic complies with all relevant medical regulations, giving you complete peace of mind.
How to Choose a Clinic You Can Trust
Regardless of what cosmetic treatment you’re considering, you need to spend time doing your research first.
Look for clinics that:
- Offer thorough one-to-one consultations before any treatment takes place
- Use medically approved products and equipment
- Operate in clean, clinical environments
- Put your safety and wellbeing first, over profit
At LASE Cosmetic, aesthetics should never come at the cost of safety. We support the introduction of these regulations that hold the entire industry to the same high standard that we’ve upheld from day one.
