Facelift
As we age the skin of the face can start to sag, particularly around the mid and lower face. While non-surgical treatments such as dermal fillers can help restore volume successfully, sometimes it is best approached via our expert facelift Newcastle surgeons. Facelift techniques have progressed greatly over the last ten years, and we are able to offer patients a variety of facial rejuvenation procedures.
Facelift surgery refers to a group of procedures designed to address sagging and loss of definition in the face as part of the natural ageing process. Changes commonly affect the mid and lower face, where skin laxity and tissue descent can become more noticeable over time. While non-surgical treatments such as dermal fillers may help restore volume in selected cases, surgical lifting is sometimes the more appropriate option for repositioning facial tissues.
What facelift surgery is designed to address
Facelift surgery aims to improve facial contours by lifting and supporting the underlying tissues, rather than simply tightening the skin. Depending on the technique used, it may help to:
- Reduce sagging in the mid or lower face
- Improve jawline definition
- Address deep facial folds
- Restore balance between facial features
The goal is natural-looking facial rejuvenation that preserves your individual features and expressions while addressing changes caused by facial ageing.
Types of facelift procedures
Facelift surgery is not a single operation but a category of procedures that target different areas of the face. Common types include:
- Traditional (full) facelift – addresses the mid and lower face
- Upper facelift – focuses on the upper facial area
- Mid facelift – targets sagging in the cheek region
- Deep plane and SMAS lift – repositions deeper facial support layers
- Lower facelift – often combined with a neck lift to improve jawline and neck contour
The most suitable approach depends on the location and extent of facial ageing.
Surgical techniques and developments
Facelift techniques have evolved significantly in recent years, with greater emphasis on lifting underlying structures rather than skin alone. This can support more durable results and a natural appearance.
Technique selection is based on:
- Degree of skin laxity
- Facial tissue position
- Bone structure
- Individual goals and expectations
Male and female facelift surgery
Facelift surgery is offered to both women and men. Male facelift surgery takes into account differences in skin thickness, hairline position, and facial anatomy, with techniques adapted accordingly.
Combining facelift with other treatments
Facelift surgery may be combined with other facial procedures where appropriate, such as:
- Neck lift surgery
- Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
- Brow lift surgery
- Skin rejuvenation treatments
Combining procedures is considered carefully to ensure balanced results and appropriate recovery.
Consultation and planning
An initial consultation allows for detailed assessment of facial structure and discussion of concerns. Surgical options are explained clearly, including benefits, limitations, and recovery considerations. A treatment plan is then developed based on individual anatomy and priorities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Making the decision to undergo surgical procedures can be a difficult one, and there are many questions you may have. Please read the frequently asked questions below which may answer any queries or ease any concerns you may have.
Surgery to rejuvenate the face is most common in patients over 45, and we perform both female and male facelift surgery. A consultation is needed to ensure we’re able to provide you the most suitable treatment.
Depending on the degree of surgery required it would be performed at our day hospital or in an overnight hospital. Your surgeon will make incisions to allow the tissues to be tightened and the excess skin removed. This type of facial rejuvenation takes 2 – 4 hours, on average.
This will always depend on what type of facelift procedure you choose and the nature of your own tissues. Most patients find the results of face-lifting to be long-lasting.
At LASE Cosmetic in Newcastle, our plastic surgeons are all UK-trained, highly experienced, and hold the FRCS (Plast.) qualification. They are recognised on the specialist register for plastic surgery at the General Medical Council (GMC).
Yes. There are different types of facelift but mini-facelifts and less invasive types can often be performed under local anaesthetic with reduced downtime.
Our surgeons are all highly trained and experienced plastic surgeons. However scars of any sort are permanent and visible. Our surgeons do their utmost to make scars as discrete as they can, and once faded they are often very acceptable and not easily seen.
A mini facelift is a less extensive procedure than a traditional facelift, with smaller scars, less tissue dissection, and often shorter recovery time. It can sometimes be done under local anaesthetic as a day-case procedure. It’s typically best suited to younger patients with early signs of ageing or older patients with mild changes.
All surgery comes with risks, but, in the hands of experienced plastic surgeons such as those that practice from LASE Cosmetic, facelift surgery is usually considered safe. All risks are explained at the consultation and the surgeons allow you time to ask questions and consider the information provided before making any decisions.
This will vary according to factors including the type of facelift you have had, the heaviness of the facial tissues, your lifestyle and the position of your facial tissues before surgery. In general though, a facelift result might last for many years, but this cannot be guaranteed.
