Breast Reduction

A large bust can affect your lifestyle, your self-image and even contribute to back pain, neck pain, and skin problems. We can help with surgical treatment to reduce your bust.

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure designed to reduce breast volume and weight in order to improve comfort, proportion, and overall balance. A larger bust can contribute to physical symptoms such as back, neck, or shoulder discomfort, as well as practical difficulties with clothing and daily activities.

What breast reduction surgery is designed to address

Breast reduction surgery aims to remove excess breast tissue and skin to make the breasts smaller and lighter, while maintaining a natural shape. The procedure may help address:

  • Physical discomfort, including back or shoulder pain
  • Limitations with exercise or movement
  • Disproportion between breast size and body frame
  • Skin problems such as intetrigo

The focus is on improving comfort and balance rather than achieving a specific cup size.

Combining breast reduction with a breast lift

Breast reduction is often combined with a breast lift (mastopexy). This is because reducing breast volume typically involves reshaping and repositioning the remaining tissue and nipple to achieve a supported, balanced result.

Whether a breast lift is included depends on:

  • Degree of breast droop
  • Amount of tissue being removed
  • Skin quality and elasticity

These factors are assessed during consultation.

Surgical techniques and scarring

There are several surgical techniques for breast reduction, and the most suitable approach depends on individual anatomy and goals. Where appropriate, minimal-access techniques may be used to help limit scarring and support recovery.

Scar placement, expected healing, and long-term changes are explained in detail before surgery.

Safety and recovery

Breast reduction surgery is a well-established procedure when performed by experienced surgeons. Recovery involves a period of rest and gradual return to normal activity, with swelling and discomfort reducing over time.

Clear aftercare guidance and follow-up appointments form an important part of the overall treatment process.

Consultation and assessment

A consultation provides the opportunity to discuss physical symptoms, breast size concerns, and suitability for surgery. Surgical options, including whether a combined reduction and lift is appropriate, are explained clearly and without pressure.

The focus is on providing balanced, evidence-based information to support informed decision-making at a comfortable pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Making the decision to undergo surgical procedures can be a difficult one, and there are many questions you may have. Please read the frequently asked questions below which may answer any queries or ease any concerns you may have.

Breast reduction surgery reduces the volume to the breasts. Please note, we offer various types of breast surgery, including breast lifts, if you’re more concerned with position rather than size. Women often choose this procedure to feel more comfortable and confident as well as to look better in clothes.

Women who wish to reduce the size of their breasts are most suitable for this type of breast surgery. It is not suitable for women who wish to enhance their breasts (breast enlargement surgery) or lift the breasts (mastopexy) although we can combine the latter with reduction surgery. Book a consultation to determine whether this is the most appropriate procedure for you.

During breast reduction surgery, excess tissue is removed in order to make the breasts smaller. The technique your surgeon chooses will depend on your personal goals and how much your breast size is due to decrease.

In most cases, both breasts are made smaller, although in the case of asymmetry, one breast can be reduced in order to create a more equal aesthetic. This type of breast surgery takes 2-3 hours, on average, but this will vary depending on the patient.

After your surgery to reduce the size of the breasts, you will notice some swelling and tenderness, which is normal, and painkillers can be prescribed to manage any pain. You might be kept overnight to ensure you’re recovering well.

Full aftercare information is provided after breast reduction surgery to aid recovery, including how to care for your scars and guidance on when to return to exercising or work. Usually, patients take around 4-6 weeks to recover, but this varies from patient to patient.

Exercise should be avoided initially, and you should wear the compression garments provided. A follow-up appointment allows your surgeon to make sure you’re healing well.

This is an important topic to discuss with your surgeon. In most cases, it should be assumed that breast reduction surgery will negatively affect the future ability to breastfeed and the ability most likely will be lost due to the surgery. If this is of concern, consideration should be given to deferring the surgery until your family is complete.

Not normally. The nipple usually remains attached to the breast tissue in a breast reduction. In some cases, the nipple might need to be removed and can then be reattached as a free nipple graft.

This varies from surgeon to surgeon. This can be discussed at the consultation. If drains are removed, they are usually removed the next day before you go home.

It would certainly be helpful at first. Your surgeon will give you specific advice, but it is best to sleep on your back for at least the first week or two.

Your surgeon will advise you about this, but usually the provided post-operative bra is best for the first couple of weeks. After this time, it may become a little loose as it stretches and the post-op swelling reduces. At this time, it might be appropriate to switch into a replacement bra, but your surgeon will discuss this with you.

The results are long-term, although if you gain a significant amount of weight or become pregnant, this may change your breast size. Similarly, the ageing process doesn’t stop, and your breasts may change as you get older.

It’s advised that you pick a surgical expert for any plastic surgery breast reduction. When it comes to this sort of procedure, it’s best to speak to an expert. The surgeons at LASE Cosmetic here in Newcastle are breast rejuvenation specialists.

If you decide to go ahead with a breast reduction procedure, a skilled surgeon will talk you through the procedure and discuss your options based on your personal circumstances.

Yes, all scars are permanent. The scars of a breast reduction will hopefully heal neatly and discreetly, but they are always permanent.

Breast Reduction Review

I had an appointment with Mr Ali-Khan to talk about breast reduction surgery. This is something I have been thinking about for a long time and have put off. Making excuses for not doing it. He was professional, friendly and easy to talk to. We talked about why I wanted to have the procedure, and I was able to ask as many questions as I could think of. I didn't feel rushed and got clear and easy to understand answers. I look forward to my next appointment and getting the operation booked.
