Women who wish to rejuvenate their breasts by repositioning them are most suitable for this type of surgery. It is not suitable for women who wish to increase the size of their breasts (breast enlargement surgery) or reduce the breasts size although we can combine the latter with mastopexy surgery (breast reduction).

During breast lift surgery, excess skin is removed, and the breast is repositioned. This very rarely may include detaching and reattaching the nipple and the inclusion of an implant. The technique your surgeon chooses will depend on the severity of the laxity of the skin and tissue, as well as your goals.

This is an important question and one to discuss with your surgeon. In many cases, it remains possible to breastfeed after breast lift surgery, but this cannot be guaranteed. Many surgeons advise deferring such surgery until after completion of your family, if the possible loss of the ability to breastfeed is of concern.

Not usually. In most breast lift procedures, the nipples remain attached to the breast throughout. In more extreme breast lift cases, the nipple might be removed and reattached as a ‘free nipple graft’. Usually this can be predicted in advance and will be discussed by your surgeon, but it might also be used as a ‘salvage manoeuvre’ to save the nipple in the event of compromise to the blood supply to the tissues.

It would certainly be helpful at first. Your surgeon will give you specific advice, but it is best to sleep on your back for at least the first week or two.

Your surgeon will advise you about this, but usually the provided post-operative bra is best for the first couple of weeks. After this time, it may become a little loose as it stretches and the post-op swelling reduces. At this time, it might be appropriate to switch into a replacement bra but your surgeon will discuss this with you.

After your breast lift and augmentation surgery to reposition the breasts, you may notice some swelling and soreness. Painkillers can be prescribed to manage any pain. You normally will be kept overnight to ensure you recover well.

Detailed aftercare information will be provided after the surgery to ensure you know how to care for your scars. You will also receive advice on when to return to work. Usually, patients usually take around 4-6 weeks to recover, but this varies from patient to patient. The full breast lift result may take a few weeks to be seen as swelling subsides.

Exercise should be avoided until you’re advised otherwise, and you should wear the compression garments provided. A follow-up appointment allows your breast rejuvenation surgeon to make sure you’re healing well and the implants, if used, are settling well.

The results are long term although if you gain a significant amount of weight or become pregnant this may change your breast size. Similarly, the ageing process doesn’t stop and your breasts may change as you get older.

In cases of minor breast lift, the surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic but in most cases, it is better to consider a general anaesthetic because it is more comfortable for the patient.

Sometimes it is possible to place implants at the same time as a breast lift. At other times it is better to perform them as a staged procedure. This will be discussed and explained by your surgeon once they assess you and understand your request. If implants are placed as a (later) staged procedure, this can usually be done after 3 months of the breast life once swelling has reduced and healing is complete.
