Making the decision to undergo a breast enhancement procedure can be a difficult one, and there are many questions you may have. Please read the frequently asked questions below which may answer any queries or ease any concerns you may have.

A breast enlargement, also known as a ‘boob job’, is an aesthetic procedure designed to increase the size of the breasts using implants. In this process, a small incision is made under the breasts to allow for implantation. Depending on the desired outcome of the surgery, the implants can either be placed under the breast tissue and over the chest muscle, or behind the chest muscle as well. Before the operation, a consultant surgeon will ask you a series of questions and conduct examinations to assess your suitability for the surgery. Technical elements of the surgery itself will also be discussed at this time, such as the positioning and size of the implants.

On average, the time for breast augmentation surgery is roughly 1-2 hours. Although this can vary from patient to patient. Once the procedure is complete, the surgeon will stitch up the incisions and dress the area.

If you’re thinking ‘should I get a breast augmentation?’, there are a number of factors you should consider first. One of these is to research the type of implants available and their features. Women who wish to boost the size of their breasts are most suitable for this type of breast surgery. A consultation is vital to determine whether this is the most appropriate procedure for you.

There is no specific time frame, but they should not be considered a lifelong device. Modern implants have usually been tested for up to 10 years but that does not mean they will all last that long.

Our advice is, even if you have no problems with your implants, once they have been in place for 10-12 years it might be worth booking a review with your surgeon to confirm that all is well. As well as a physical check, an ultrasound or MRI might be considered. If these investigations are normal and no concerns are found, we would suggest a further review every 2-3 years thereafter, unless symptoms occur.

Implants will, at some point, need replacing. This is usually after 10+ years unless there are problems with the implants, and they require replacing or removing.

This varies from patient to patient and is an important part of the discussion with your surgeon. Important things to consider include:

How much natural breast tissue do you have to start with?
Are you wanting the most natural result or a fuller upper pole?
How active are you?
Is a breast lift also advisable?

These additional questions might have an influence on whether over or under the muscle is better in your individual case.

Normally yes. In most cases, breast augmentation is unlikely to affect a woman’s ability to breast feed.

Initially this is advisable. Your surgeon will advise you of their regime after surgery, but in most cases a few days to a week of sleeping on your back (rather than on your side or on the front) is sensible. Make sure to check with your surgeon though.

Our surgeons are all consultant plastic surgeons and thus highly trained in minimising post-operative complications. The best ways to minimise implant complications include avoiding contamination of the implant at the time of surgery, minimising the risk of trauma to the implant as it is inserted into the breast, and minimising trauma to the implant as the surgical wounds are closed. Your surgeon will advise how they perform the surgery during a consultation.

The advice will vary from surgeon to surgeon, however the post-surgical bras that are usually provided are useful for 1-2 weeks. Beyond this time, as the post-operative swelling reduces, they may become looser and less useful, so a sports bra or new post-surgical bra might be worth investing in at that time.

Post-surgery you will notice some swelling and tenderness which is normal, and painkillers will be prescribed to manage any initial discomfort. You might be kept overnight to monitor your wellbeing.

Patients are given full aftercare information, including how to care for scars and advice on when to return to work. On average, patients usually take around 4-6 weeks to recover but this varies patient to patient. The profile describes how tall the implant is (if it were lying flat on a table) or how far forward pushes the breast after surgery with the patient standing up.
